Autumn in Paris: Meet the Master

It's always an adventure when buying art, and in October, Aaron Newman set off for France in search of modern and decorative arts - and was looking forward to the unexpected along the way. It was the perfect season for buying. Autumn was just reaching Paris, and the merchants were open for business.

Aaron's first priority was to meet with Jacques Janisson, a personal friend of Aaron's and one of the co-authors of “Schneider” by Edith Mannoni, as well as a Le Verre Francais and Schneider dealer based out of Paris. They sat down for a noisette at the Le Louvre des Antiquaires to discuss the art deco glass and ceramic market before Aaron's trip got underway. Before the meeting ended, Aaron purchased from Jacques a stunning, 18-inch intercalaire vase with two beautiful cabochons.

An important part of their meeting was the discussion of current trends in art deco glass. Aaron and Jacques remarked how the market for Le Verre Francais, Schneider and Daum Nancy glass is only getting stronger. Prices have been rising and rare patterns are becoming even more difficult to find. There has been less and less turnover of fine glass in the market, causing the increase of prices and higher demand for these particular glassmakers.

It was a highlight to speak with Jacques in person, and hear his thoughts about the art deco glass and ceramic markets. Jacques also reaffirmed that Steve Newman Fine Arts' long-term commitment to the art deco glass and ceramic market is one that he himself is just as committed to. Speaking with someone as brilliant as Jacques is always a rich and rewarding experience, and it gave Aaron momentum as he started searching for pieces in Paris and beyond.
